A Daughter Brought Her Parents to See Me

The other day, a married couple came to my Shisui retreat.
Their daughter, who has been coming to see me regularly, brought her parents with her.
Her father had problems with his knees and lower back.
Her mother had fallen the previous autumn and had been diagnosed with a spinal fracture.
Since then, her back had remained bent forward.
⸻
I began with the father.
When I touched the area around his knee, his body responded quite strongly.
I was not pressing hard.
Even so, he reacted sensitively depending on where I touched.
I could feel considerable tension not only around his knee but also in his lower back.
I checked the areas that had become rigid and gradually worked to restore balance throughout his body.
⸻
After the session, I asked him to check his knee again.
He said that, at that moment, he could hardly feel any pain in it.
The discomfort in his lower back had also almost disappeared.
However, he had told me that his back usually hurt when he woke up each morning.
I could not know how he would feel the following morning.
We would need to wait and see whether the change continued.
Still, he was very pleased that his body felt easier at the end of the session.
⸻
The mother’s response was quite different from the father’s.
She showed no particularly strong reaction wherever I touched her.
A bodywork session cannot alter the spinal fracture caused by her fall.
What I focused on instead were the muscles that appeared to have tightened in order to protect her body after the injury.
Her back.
Her lower back.
The area around her chest.
Several areas seemed to be restricting her ability to straighten her body.
I gradually worked to release that tension.
⸻
Before the session, she could not place the back of her head against a wall while standing with her back to it.
Her back was curved, and her head projected forward.
After the session, I asked her to stand against the wall once more.
Her back appeared straighter than before.
With her back against the wall, she was now able to place the back of her head against it as well.
This did not mean that the condition of her bones had changed.
I think the release of tension in the surrounding muscles made it easier for her to straighten her body at that moment.
She was delighted by the change.
⸻
My work is difficult to explain.
I do not press hard or massage the body.
Sometimes it may appear that I am simply resting my hands lightly on someone.
This must have been an unfamiliar experience for both parents.
Even so, they said nothing and quietly entrusted themselves to the session.
⸻
Their daughter had received a session only the week before.
For that reason, I did not work with her this time.
While observing her parents, the three of us talked about various things.
The daughter paid for both of their sessions.
⸻
She wanted her parents to experience something that had helped her.
She coordinated their schedules.
She made the appointment.
She brought them all the way to Shisui.
Then, rather than receiving a session herself, she remained nearby and watched over them.
⸻
As they were leaving, both parents said that their bodies felt easier.
Her father remarked,
“You never know until you come and give something a try.”
It takes about an hour by car to reach the Shisui retreat from their home.
It is not particularly close.
Even so, their daughter coordinated their schedules and brought them here.
She was the one who gave her parents the opportunity to feel better.
It was a beautiful sight.
